PLASTISOL INKS

PRODUCT INFORMATION

Plastisol inks are used for textile printing. Different types of textiles can be used, such as: 100% cotton, polyester or polycotton. Printing can be performed "wet on wet" with automatic and/or manual machines, producing a minimal ink build-up. The plastisol inks can be printed directly on textiles or on transfer paper.

COMPOSITION

Plastisol inks are composed of fine particles of PVC polymers or copolymer resins and a liquid plasticizer. Typical plastisol formulas will also contain stabilizers, fillers, thickeners etc.

Plasticizer A vehicle (base) for the dispersed resin and pigment. Later they become the modifiers, which determines the flexibility of the inks.
Vinyl resin Acts as the binder of the pigment to the liquid plasticizer
Pigment Determines the color and the opacity of the ink. Higher pigment load yields a brighter ink color on dark fabrics. When the quantity of pigment exceeds the quantity of binder, crocking will occur. Crocking is a loss of pigmentation trough abrasion and/or washing caused by the lack of binder, which holds the pigment in an ink film.
Filler Used to increase the viscosity and/or the thickness of the product proportionally with the quantity added.
Stabilizer Prevents ink discoloration
Viscosity reducer Viscosity can be reduced with P-10 Reducer (recommended limit: up to 5% by weight)
Viscosity increaser Viscosity can be increased with Thickening Powder

PLASTISOL BASES

Softhand Base Standard extender base. Can be used as an additive for premixed colors to soften and extend the ink.

CURING

Plastisol inks cure in the temperature range of 140C to 150C (300F to 320F) for 40 - 60 seconds. Poor curing results in inferior adhesion, poor wash fastness, dye migration, cracking and crumbling.

SCREENS

Retensionable metal or aluminum frame screens are recommended. These frames will supply the proper tension (20-40 Newton's or higher) without warping. They also allow the screen mesh to pop off and/or shear away from the garment directly behind the squeegee pass.

MESH COUNTS

For all screens monofilament fabrics should be used. This type of mesh will yield the least resistance for a good shear between the screen and the garment. It will also produce a better durability and minimize sawtoothing after image exposure. For printing white or clear designs or backgrounds on dark fabrics such as 50/50 poly cotton or 100% cotton, use 80 - 110 monofilament mesh. Using a 125-160 mesh will result in a softer hand and a higher detail. Double hits or flushing between hits may be required with the use of finer meshes. For printing on white or clear background, 160 - 250 meshes are recommended. These mesh counts will produce the least amount of flash drying between colors and will allow more wet and wet printing. Their use will result in a softer hand and a higher production rate.
